This is the first in a series of books which have captured the imagination of the reading public. The series begins with the focus on Harry Potter, a seemingly normal eleven-year-old who lives with his adoptive family and is constantly persecuted by them. He manages to survive the experience and discover that he has magical powers and a greater destiny. Harry hates his Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon and their bratty son, Dudley. Harry is relegated to a closet under the stairs, and the family despises him. Harry is always getting into trouble for the strange things that occur in the home which he has no control over. Once he receives a message from a messenger, who is determined to deliver the message he discovers the truth about himself. His mother was a witch, and his father was a wizard. An evil wizard killed his parents, and he survived the attack which has made him famous and a legendary hero. His forehead is marked with a lightning bolt shaped scar which we can presume is from the attack that killed his parents.

Harry leaves home to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry where he learns the basics of magic, learns to ride a broomstick, learns to play Quidditch on a flying broom and makes some excellent and close friends. Harry learns that his destiny is to face the evil wizard who killed his parents with the help of his friends and his newly discovered magical powers. The adventures of Harry Potter are entertaining and combine fantasy, fun, fright, and triumphs, teaching kids everywhere that they can overcome adversity.

Critics everywhere weighed in to rate this delightful first book in the series, including the Chicago Tribune (“the story delights”), the New York Times (“Harry is destined for greatness”), USA Today (“you don’t have to be a wizard or a kid to appreciate the spell cast by Harry Potter”) and Newsweek.
