This book in the series finds Harry at the halfway point in this wizard training. He wants to get away once and for all from the Dursleys and travel to play in the International Quidditch Cup. He needs to find out more about a mysterious event that will take place at Hogwarts during the school year. Apparently, the event involves two rival schools of magic and the event has not taken place for more than a hundred years. Although Harry would like to be a normal fourteen year old wizard he is not normal, even by the standards of wizards. Unfortunately for Harry being different as a wizard can have deadly consequences.

Harry joins Hogwarts for his fourth year of school after he joins the Wesleys at the Quiddich World Cup. He is somehow entered into a contest that is not only unusual but also challenges his wizard skills, tests his friendships and tests his very character. All of this takes place while there are signs everywhere that his old enemy and nemesis is getting stronger every day.

Stephen King left a review of this book stating that it seemed like a supernatural version of “Tom Brown’s School Days”. He said Harry is a kid that most children feel that they are, placed among adults who are unpleasant and unimaginative. These adults are referred to as “muggles”, a word that has made it into the Oxford Dictionary. Potter’s invitation to Hogwarts comes by Owl, next by Sorting Hat and then in the Goblet of Fire which is smoldering and sheds sparks. King says it would be nice for a relatively old codger like him to be invited to the ball. The Associated Press says that the story is fast paced and contains plenty of surprises. Just when readers think they know what’s happening and who is on what side smoking guns are turned into red herrings. The Daily Record said that Potter enthusiasts would not be disappointed.
